FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Steven Kelly and Travis Wokasch battled each other for third place in the 157-pound bracket while Jordan Larsen and Alec Bird took fifth place at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively, to highlight the second day of action for the Colorado Mines wrestling team at the Citrus Open on Friday.
Kelly opened up action on Friday with a matchup against Terner Gott of John Carroll, and fell to the eventual 157-pound champion by a 4-3 final to slide into the consolation semifinals. Wokasch battled Michael Letcher of Ohio Northern in the other semifinal matchup, and fell to him via pinfall 1:57 into the match to also be relegated to the consolation bracket. There, Wokasch took a 6-3 victory over Brandon Seppelt and Kelly took down Justin Frazer via pinfall to push both Orediggers to the third place matchup. Kelly won a tightly contested battle – emerging with a 2-1 victory.
Larsen captured a victory over Blake Sorenson of Upper Iowa in his first matchup of the day by a 4-2 final, but fell to eventual champion Mike Williams of UNC Pembroke, 5-1, to slide into the consolation bracket. Larson fell to Joe Hambleton of Cornell College, 3-0, before earning a victory in the fifth place matchup via a medical forfeit.
Bird defeated Michael Pawlitz 7-4 in his first matchup but fell to Alex Coolidge of Cornell College via pinfall in the consolation semifinals at the 3:45 mark of the match. Then, much like Larsen, Bird was named the fifth place finisher after Brad Baus of Augsburg medically withdrew from the tournament.
Chance Davis fell to Ridge White of UNC Pembroke in his only matchup of the day by a 6-4 decision. Davis entered the day with a 2-1 record at the tournament.
Ryan Swanson took on Bryan Steinmetz of John Carroll in his first match of the day and earned a 5-4 decision before falling by the same score to Shiheem Bryant of UNC Pembroke in the next round. He then took on Andrew Roberts in the seventh place match and fell by a 10-3 score.
The Orediggers will next be in action on January 7 at the Hastings College Open in Hastings, Neb.
