HAYS, Kan. – Colorado School of Mines wrestling staked a 3-0 lead in its initial dual of the season at Fort Hays State, but was outscored 31-12 over the final nine weight classes as the host Tigers won 31-15 Thursday evening in Hays, Kansas.
Following four escapes and a third period takedown, freshman Zachary Gracia gained a 9-8 win over Lawson Ludwin at the opening 125-pound class on ride time.
FHSU (2-0, 1-0 MIAA) answered with a pin at 133 pounds and 12-7 decision at 141, before freshman Skyler Lykins rallied from a 4-1 deficit versus Ky Biddle at 149 pounds with two second period takedowns and a third period fall in 6:27 to square the match at 9-all.
The Tigers took command with the next 16 points on four consecutive wins, recording two decisions, one major decision and a forfeit.
Junior Paul Wilson added the last points of the evening for the Orediggers (0-1) with a pin in 1:46 against Cash Drylie at 197 pounds.
With the 2014 calendar complete, Mines returns to the mat at 6 p.m. on Jan. 7 for its home-opening dual against Northwest Kansas Tech at Volk Gymnasium.
