SPEARFISH, S.D. – Slowed by 23 turnovers, Colorado School of Mines women's basketball struggled to keep pace with Black Hills State after halftime Friday as the host Yellow Jackets swept the season series by a final of 64-51 at the Donald E. Young Center.
Down only 27-25 at the break, Mines (11-13, 6-12 RMAC) quickly reclaimed its first lead since 4-2 as senior Sam Rusk banged in a three-pointer 19 seconds into the half.
The Yellow Jackets followed with a 9-1 spurt for a 36-29 margin, and eventually grew the advantage to nine on a handful of occasions over the ensuing 9:59, the last coming at 52-43 with 6:56 left.
The Orediggers got as close as 53-49 at 4:05 before BHSU (13-9, 11-7 RMAC) closed on a game-ending 11-2 run.
Mines finished 21-of-53 (.396) overall and 3-of-20 (.150) outside the perimeter, while the Yellow Jackets, bolstered by 56.0 percent (14-of-25) shooting in the second, ended 22-of-50 (.440) and 7-of-22 (.318) on threes.
Junior Courtney Martin shot 7-of-10 to lead the women with 16 points. Sophomore Laura Tyree posted 10 and senior Taylor Helbig had nine and five rebounds.
BHSU's Logan Cowan scored a game-high 17 behind 7-of-11 makes. Chelsey Biegler came off the pine for 15; Cassidy Kotelman had 12 and Taylor Trohkimoinen added 11.
The Oredigggers wrap up the road portion of the regular season at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Chadron State.
