LUBBOCK, Texas – Colorado School of Mines dropped their final game of the 2016 Arbor Hotels Classic to St. Mary's 75-61 on Saturday, November 19 at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian.
Mines (2-5) played the Rattlers (4-1) tit-for-tat through the first three quarters of the game, but STMU scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.
The first half saw the Orediggers and Rattlers play each other to a draw as the teams went into the intermission tied at 31-31.
Mines initially fell behind by six in the opening quarter (12-6) before rallying and taking their own lead at 22-19 after back-to-back layups by
Mikaela Moore and
Jess McGovern. The Orediggers held that lead for most of the quarter, and would have taken it into the half if not for a three-pointer by Destiny Navarro that squared things up with six seconds remaining.Â
That last second made long ball seemed to energize St. Mary's as they opened the second half with 10 straight points to take over a 41-31 lead. Mines slowly chipped away at that advantage over the period, and got back as close as four (46-42) after two made free throws from
Anna Kollmorgen.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Orediggers got in the second half as St. Mary's slowly rebuilt their lead and eventually pulled away for good. LaBraile Fields scored half of her game-high 24 points in the foruthquarter to help the Rattlers put the game away.
