GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines' season comes to a close as they fall to MSU Denver 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
MSU Denver's (12-6-1) Jeff Gillis pushed across his second goal of the game 1:11 into the first overtime to drop Mines (10-6-3) from the RMAC Tournament.
The first 28 minutes of the match was well-played and fairly even between the two teams with both having a scoring chance. That all changed at 28:22 when Mines suffered a red card which would put them a man-down the rest of the way.
Naturally, MSU Denver took over the run of play the next 18 minutes plus which tested the resolve of the Mines backline and starting goalkeeper
Leo Chely.
The Orediggers preserved though and it eventually paid off at 42:46 when
Ford Edwards started a breakaway. He found
John Haist making a run down the right wing and fed him past the MSUD defender to give him a 1v1 against goalie Hayden Rus. Haist then shot from the right side of the box and buried it into the back left corner to put Mines up 1-0 at the break.
Then, only 10 minutes into the second half, MSU Denver equalized when D'Angelo Escobar fed a perfect through ball to Jeff Gillis for a goal that was eerily similar to Haist's goal.
From there, Mines withstood several chances from the Roadrunners to take the lead as
Leo Chely made nine saves in the game which forced overtime.
MSU Denver outshot Mines 23-9 and 11-4 on shots on goal. The Roadrunners also had a 7-4 advantage on corner kick opportunities.
Ashi Geberkidane led the Orediggers with three shots as he
Jackson Shelledy,
Jason Zobott, and
John Haist each had a shot on target.
