Two Comebacks, Glasgow's 100th Win Highlight Mines' Saturday

GAME 1 - Mines 5, Adams State 2
Two home runs by Colorado School of Mines helped them overcome an early deficit and win the morning game, 5-2, over Adams State.

The victory was the 100th for head coach Leah Glasgow as Mines compiled 10 hits - including a 3-for-3 game by Loren Dempsey - and used an unusual play to take the lead for good. Claire Stringfellow (7-5) was excellent, surrendering two early runs but hanging tough to strike out four in the complete-game win.

ASU got on the board in the top of the first when Tyler Hays doubled in Kaytlynn Johnson, but Mines tied it up in the second when Katie Leiker and Kelsey Buechler worked a double steal from the corners, with Leiker being caught out but Buechler scoring.

The Grizzlies retook the lead when April Riggins smacked a two-on single up the middle in the third to score Brittany Phillips, but Mines would hold the visitors off the board the rest of the way as they mounted a comeback. It started in the fourth as Megan Dickson doubled and Katie Leiker reached on an error; after Dickson was picked off at third and Dempsey singled to put two on, Pua Fujinaga tucked a ball into shallow right that took a wild carom off the diving rightfielder and into foul territory. It was enough to let Fujinaga wheel around for an inside-the-park home run, scoring three runs and putting Mines up 4-3.

The insurance run came in the fifth when Sonoma Toot groove a no-doubter to left, her second homer of the year, to cap it at 5-3. Meanwhile, Stringfellow retired her final eight batters faced to finish the win.

Kacee Schroeder (4-7) took the loss for ASU allowing two earned on 10 hits.

Glasgow wasn't the only Oredigger to hit a century milestone in the game; sophomore Clara Larson's first-inning double was her 100th career hit.

GAME 2 - Mines 4, Adams State 3
For the second day in a row, Mines got a walk-off double to beat Adams State by a 4-3 score.

The Orediggers secured the series win, 3-1, thanks to Clara Larson's double in the bottom of the seventh to score Brielle Asato. it capped a three-run comeback by the Orediggers, who had trailed 3-1 in the fifth.

Adams State went up 2-0 early, first as Taya McWilliams laid down a perfect squeeze play to score Stephanie Huff in the second, and then as Tyler Hays homered to right center in the third. Mines chipped away as Kelsey Buechler scored on a double steal with Clara Larson in the third, but ASU loaded the bases and got an Angel Micciulli single to extend their lead to 3-1 in the fourth.

Mines' comeback started in the fifth with two runs to tie the game. With the bases loaded and no outs, Clara Larson fouled out deep down the leftfield line allowing Dani Valerio to score, and Megan Dickson grounded out to shortstop to allow Asato to plate later in the inning, making it 3-3.

The score stayed that way until the seventh as Mines worked its magic once again in their final at-bat. Asato led off with a walk, and two batters later, Larson roped a double off the fence in center, allowing Asato to score from first and win the game.

Hallie Smith (7-7) battled to even her record as she retired nine of her last 10 batters faced and was charged with one earned run on eight hits, with six strikeouts. Brittany Phillips (2-4) allowed three earned and walked five for ASU.
