ALAMOSA, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines bounced back from a loss in the opener to split their series-opening doubleheader at Adams State on Sunday.
The Orediggers (18-10, 15-7 RMAC) lost a 7-5 heartbreaker before easing to a 9-2 win later in the afternoon.
GAME 1 - Adams State 7, Mines 5
Two late runs by Adams State broke open a tie game as the Grizzlies took the opener 7-5.
Paige Noehring went 3-for-4 while
Clara Larson drove in four of Mines' five runs to lead the Orediggers at the plate.
ASU put a run across in the first but
Sonoma Toot's solo home run in the second tied it 1-1. A Tyler Hays double in the second put the hosts up 3-2 before Larson tied with a two-run single in the third, but the lead again didn't last long as Paige Reichmuth drove in two with a base hit in the bottom of the inning.
Larson drilled a two-run homer to plate Noehring and tie it 5-5 in the fifth, but ASU would have the last say as Kaytlynn Johnson doubled in a run to go ahead in the fifth and added an insurance inside-the-park home run in the sixth with a shot down the rightfield line.
Lauren Murphy (8-8) struck out eight to earn the win. Mines combined
Claire Stringfellow (2.0 IP, 2 ER) and
Maddie Rogers (4.0 IP, 4 ER, 5K) with Rogers taking the loss.
GAME 2 - Mines 9, Adams State 2
Mines took a big early lead and never looked back, cruising to a 9-2 win in the day's second game.
Hallie Smith (8-5) allowed only two runs with four strikeouts in the complete-game win. She was well-supported by 12 Mines hits, including
Kara Jones' 3-for-4 day and multi-hit games by
Clara Larson,
Pua Fujinaga, and
Kara Walling.
Fujinaga got the scoring started with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the second, and
Paige Noehring drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single on the next at-bat.
An ASU home run in the bottom half cut the lead to 3-1, but Mines broke the game open in the third in fourth with five combined runs.
Katie Leiker singled in
Sonoma Toot in the third and then scored on an error before Fujinaga scored on another error in the fourth. Larson doubled in two runs later in the inning and Mines was suddenly up 8-1.
Walling tacked on an RBI single in the seventh before Johnson had an RBI groundout in the Grizzlies' final at-bat.
ASU combined three pitchers with Whitney Fields (0-5) taking the loss.Â
