Orediggers Knock Off UCCS, 2-0

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team took down UCCS on Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 victory at Stermole Stadium.

Baptiste Debuire and Ben Overholt spearheaded the victory with one goal apiece. Ian Kugler and Tristan Semelsberger accounted for the assists. Ryan Wilson led all players with four shots, putting one on goal. Jason Zobott, Overholt and Debuire each finished with three attempts while Lucas King, Adam Kindorf and Semelsberger combined for six shots in the win. Drew Johnson (4-2-0) was only required to make one save on his way to the shutout and the win in goal.

Mines (4-2-0, 2-0-0 RMAC) finished the match with 20 shots as a team and placed five of those on frame. The Orediggers also produced five corner-kick opportunities and limited UCCS to just five shots and no chances from the corner flag. The victory keeps Mines on top of the conference standings, tied with Regis and Westminster. The Mountain Lions of UCCS only put one shot on goal in 90 minutes of action as they fall to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sunny skies and pleasant temperatures welcomed a slow start for both teams on Sunday afternoon with a combined three shots in the first 20 minutes. That all changed in the 21st minute when Semelsberger played a long pass from his defensive half of the field down to Overholt who was charging into the Orediggers' attacking third. Overholt touched the ball past one UCCS defender and beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the right side of the net, giving Mines the 1-0 lead. That would be the only true outburst of the opening period as the Mountain Lions and Orediggers notched just seven more shots over the next 25 minutes.

Mines came out of the locker room after halftime and kicked its offense into high gear. Twelve second-half attempts with four shots on goal would pay off for the home team in the 76th minute. This time it was Kugler with the pass, a ball that fell in behind UCCS's defense for a sprinting Debuire. With only the goalkeeper in front of him, Debuire chose the simple finish with a low, hard shot to the right side of the frame. It was all the insurance the Orediggers needed thanks to a defensive effort that limited the Mountain Lions to two shots in the entire second half. None of those shots were on target, and Mines held the 2-0 advantage at the final buzzer.
