Behind 17 points from both Katie Kuhn and Laura Tyree, #25 Colorado School of Mines (15-3, 13-1) closed out each half strongly to cruise past S.D. Mines 67-46 on Friday, January 29 in Lockridge Arena.
The final three quarters of the game saw wild swings in runs, but the CSM defense locked down in the end for the decisive victory.
Mines quickly got out to a 9-2 lead midway through the opening quarter and maintained that distance as they ended the opening period, 15-10.
Leading only 17-15 in the second quarter, the Orediggers exploded with a 20-4 run over the next 7:20 seconds to take a 37-19 lead into the halftime break. 10 of those 20 points came from Katie Kuhn who buried two triples during the first half closing run.
S.D. Mines responded with an equally impressive third quarter as they poured in 23 points in the period compared to only 12 for CSM. Five different Hardrockers scored in the period including seven points from both Taylor Molstad and Megan Rohrer.
With lead back down to seven (49-42) to start the fourth quarter, the Mines defense clamped down the Hardrockers to the total of four points the entire period to cruise to a 67-46 victory. That final period saw CSM scored 11 of the first 13 points to run away with it. In particular, back-to-back three pointers from Kuhn and Caitlyn Smith blew the game open.
Notables
- As mentioned above, Mines closed out each half strong as they outscored S.D. Mines 22-9 in the second and 18-4 in the fourth. The Orediggers outscored the Hardrockers by a combined 27 points in those periods.
- Katie Kuhn and Laura Tyree each produced a game-high 17 points. Tyree had her normal all-around game with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kuhn did her damage coming off the bench as she hit 6-9 shot including three, three-pointers.
- Freshman Anna Kollmorgen was also strong on the evening with nine points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
- While quiet from the field, senior Courtney Martin swatted her way to five blocks which ties a career high.
- CSM held SDSMT to only 27% shooting from the field and a paltry 7.7% from deep.
- Mines was also 10-11 from the charity stripe.
