RAPID CITY, S.D. – Behind a monster second half and overtime from
Emily Bailey, the Colorado School of Mines escaped with a 64-61 overtime win at S.D. Mines & Technology on Saturday, December 10.
Emily Bailey scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and overtime, including six straight points in the waning minutes of the second half to even force an overtime period.
Trailing 61-60 with less than two minutes to go in overtime,
Emily Bailey put Mines (7-6, 3-1) ahead for good as she snuck jumper over the defense. Still perilously hanging to a one-point lead,
Anna Kollmorgen drove the baseline and missed a layup attempt, but she grabbed her own miss and put it back up with 14 second remainings to gives Mines a 64-61 win over SDSMT (3-6, 1-3).
The first half saw the Orediggers get out to a 17-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Initially trailing 7-6 midway through the opening period, Mines turned it around on a pair of three-points from
Cassidy Budge and five points from Bailey.Â
The Hardrockers would come roaring back though as they opened the second quarter with eight straight points to tie game at 17 apiece. From there, both teams would seemingly trade basket-for-basket before
Emily Bailey's jumper with 42 seconds left in the half put the Orediggers up 25-23 at the break.
Mines came out of the break strong and eventually got out to a four-point lead (29-25) after back-to-back baskets from
Elizabeth Tomon and Bailey.Â
The Orediggers would hold that lead throughout the third quarter, and even led by as much as six (39-33), but the Hardrockers stormed back and finally took the lead at 42-41 at the 8:27 mark in the fourth quarter. In fact, S.D. Mines eventually grew their lead to 51-47 with only 3:31 left in game.
Now with their backs firmly against the wall,
Emily Bailey put on her superwoman cape as she scored three straight baskets to put Mines in the lead with 1:03 remaining.Â
Then, tied at 53-53,
Laura Tyree looked to have the game winner with a pullback jumper down the left side of the lane, but SDSMT's Heather Rogers snuck in a layup with three seconds left to push the game into overtime. While not the game winner, Tyree's basket was still special nonetheless as it represented her 1,000th career point.Â
Now in extra time,
Mikaela Moore got the Orediggers off to a great start with the period's first three points. Bailey then put Mines up by five (60-55) with a layup with 3:23 left in overtime. But Payton Humpall drilled back-to-back three pointers to put the Hardrockers ahead 61-60 with 2:04 remaining.Â
