OREDIGGERS HAVE TWO KEY ROAD DUALS AHEAD
Colorado School of Mines returns to RMAC action this weekend with a pair of key road dual meets, visiting #6 Adams State Saturday at 2 p.m. before continuing south to New Mexico Highlands for a 2 p.m. Sunday dual. Although still early in the conference season, Saturday's dual will be especially important in the RMAC standings as the unbeaten Orediggers (5-0, 1-0 RMAC) face fellow unbeaten Adams State (3-0, 1-0 RMAC). Both duals will stream live on the RMAC Network with live results available on TrackWrestling.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Mines cruised to a 2-0 Saturday at the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, dispatching Findlay 45-3 and Simon Fraser 39-7. The Orediggers were led by a two-pin day from
Anderson Salisbury, with
Grayston DiBlasi,
Teague Dilbeck,
Jack Damenti,
Levi Farris, and
Ryan Cody also each winning twice. Mines had four pins among six bonus-point victories against Findlay, then earned bonus points in five wins against Simon Fraser.Â
HISTORY
Mines and Adams State will square off for the 62nd time in a series that dates to 1953, with ASU leading the all-time series 40-21 but Mines having won six straight duals. Last year, the Orediggers upset the then-#13 Grizzlies 24-15 at home with three straight wins to finish thanks to
Jack Damenti,
Ryan Fidel, and
Anderson Salisbury; Fidel's sudden-victory decision over Cody Lewis at 174 in the penultimate weight class sealed the result.Â
Against New Mexico Highlands, Mines leads the all-time series 15-7 as they meet for the 23rd time since 1977. Mines has won four in a row over the Cowboys including a 39-6 victory in Golden last year that saw the Orediggers win eight bouts including six with bonus points and four falls. Current Orediggers
Christian Lopez,
Tyler Krause,
Carter Noehre, and
Anderson Salisbury all picked up wins in that dual.Â
IN THE POLLS
Mines is receiving votes in the second regular-season NWCA coaches' poll, with both
Grayston DiBlasi (returning at #11 at 141) and
Anderson Salisbury (up one spot to #5 at 197) in the individual rankings. In the latest Open Mat rankings out on Wednesday, Mines moved up two spots to #23 in the dual team rankings and has four wrestlers in the individual top-20: Â
Weston DiBlasi (#11 at 125 for a fourth straight week),
Grayston DiBlasi (up one spot to #11 at 141),
Carter Noehre (#20 at 157), and Salisbury (#6 at 197). Meanwhile Adams State heads into the weekend ranked #6 in the NWCA team poll with three ranked competitors: #3 Brendon Garcia at 125, #3 Josiah Rider at 149, and #1 Noah Hermosillo at 157. Both Rider and Hermosillo are the defending national champions at their weight.
LEADING THE WAY
The Orediggers have selected four captains for the 2022-23 season:
Jack Damenti,
KJ Kearns,
Tyler Krause, and
Anderson Salisbury. Both Kearns and Salisbury are returning captains from the 2021-22 season.Â
MOVING ON UP
Anderson Salisbury continues to rack up wins in his career, and the two-time all-American recently joined an elite club with his 75th career win. At 75-24 all-time in his career, Salisbury is one of only 13 Oredigger wrestlers to reach 75 wins, a mark most recently achieved by former teammate
Weston Hunt (78); Salisbury is now 13th all-time at Mines in wins and his next would put him in a tie for 11th. Meanwhile, another Oredigger is shooting up the records in just his second season as
Grayston DiBlasi continues his winning ways. The sophomore is already an eye-popping 43-11, and his 17 falls already has him ranked 12th all-time at Mines in just a season and a half of action. He is Mines' active leader in pins with Salisbury second at 15.Â
COUNT ON IT
Through five dual meets this season, three Orediggers are 5-0 as starters -
Grayston DiBlasi at 141,
Jack Damenti at 165, and
Ryan Cody at 184. Impressively, each of the three has four bonus-point wins out of their five, as DiBlasi leads the team with 26 dual points (out of a possible 30), Cody has 24, and Damenti 21.
Weston DiBlasi (3-0),
Christian Lopez (3-0),
Carter Noehre (3-0),
Anthony Atria (2-0), and
Levi Farris (2-0) are also unbeaten in duals.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mines will compete in the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Neb. on Jan. 21 taking on Central Missouri and Newman, then return to RMAC action Jan. 27 at CSU Pueblo before closing out the month at home against Western Colorado on Jan. 29.Â
